A few months ago I found myself in possession of a number of non-album Deerhoof tracks, and in an effort to put together a "Studio Rarities" CD in chronological order, I set about finding where all these songs came from. Turned out it wasn't as easy as I expected it to be. The web's information about Deerhoof's history is achingly sparse; even their own label's site doesn't adequately chronicle what they've recorded.
But I discovered that the information is out there, in small bits and pieces distributed among a few dozen locations, all essential in some degree to the complete discography above. Without any one of the sites listed below, some information would be absent from this page.
You'll notice the "sources" cited next to some of the entries. These exist for two reasons: first, I occasionally encountered conflicting information between sites. In these cases I consulted the site that, for one reason or another, felt more valid (these are listed first). Because this is a judgement call, a link to the alternate information is also provided. Second, the information I present is often so ambiguous and obscure that I feel it necessary to link to its few tangential mentions. The citations are not as thorough as they might be, but are present at least in the most extreme cases.
Links to purchase information send you to the album's page on the actual label's site, if it exists and sells albums; otherwise, to the site asking the lowest price. Album art is displayed when it is Deerhoof art, i.e., not when it is the cover of a compilation or soundtrack.
Although I could provide mp3s of every song on here from my own collection, that would be wrong. Publicly wrong, that is. So, instead, I've linked these songs to locations that already contain them in some form or another. Puzzling Music Archive is a huge collection of music by many, many bands, who I'm fairly sure have given their approval of this distribution (Deerhoof's own website links to PMA. ...also worth a glance is suchfun.net, the totally schizophrenic host of PMA). Kill Rock Stars also provides a number of tracks, and Aquarius Records streams 1.5-minute samples of a few.
WFMU has been in the habit of archiving all their programming for some years now, as well as providing a master list of all the songs they've ever played, ever. Given these two conveniences, it's a simple matter to navigate to the "D"-artist page, browse through the multiple misspellings of Deerhoof ("Deehoof," "Deethoof"), and listen to every program on which they've been featured. From these archives I discovered how to link to specific moments in long RealAudio streams, and this is what I've done for the tracks marked above with a superscript "W." Because this is actually a time-consuming process, I've only provided this service for songs that do not appear on Deerhoof's discography proper; only rare cuts from compilations and singles are linked, and only the ones that I couldn't retrieve from other sources (in my pre-SoulSeek days): in short, only an offering to the public of what I myself needed. But yes, you can hear The Last Trumpeter Swan on WFMU if you want.
